About The Garden Route

The Garden Route is a stunningly scenic stretch of coastline, rolling green hills and towering mountain peaks, offering a mix of mountains, beaches, forests, peaceful lagoons, rivers, lakes and bustling seaside towns. The area is one of the most popular holiday destinations for South Africans and international visitors and, being only a few hours drive from Cape Town it's a popular stop for visitors travelling from Cape Town to the neighboring Eastern Cape.

A  near perfect climate (according to the Guinness Book of Records, the mildest in South Africa and second mildest in the world after Hawaii), with mild to warm summers and mild to cool winters, makes it a year-round destination. Winter's rarely fall below 10°C and summer temperatures rarely go above 28°C. Rain occurs year-round, with a slight increase during the spring months - September to November.

It's an absolute paradise for bird watchers, hikers and adventure seekers, with a number of nature reserves embracing all the eco systems. The dramatic Outeniqua and Tsitsikamma Mountains offer a unique mixture of fynbos and forest, and, some of South Africa’s top hikes, like the well loved Otter, Tsitsikamma and Dolphin Trails.

The entire area is the perfect place to escape on a romantic getaway, but is just as perfect for a family holiday. It’s a destination well suited to self-drive holidays, thanks to the well maintained and signposted roads and relatively short driving distances between towns.

Stuff To Do

While outdoor sports and activities are a big part of any Garden Route holiday, it’s not all high energy stuff. Several of the country’s best golf courses are found in the region, in fact, it’s been called the Golfing Mecca of South Africa. Just some of the world class golf courses in the region include: Fancourt (George), Pezulu and Simola  (Knysna), Pinnacle Point (Mossel Bay) and Plettenberg Bay.

Plenty of other family friendly attractions can be found as well, we can highly recommend the Bird of Prey Sanctuary, The Wolf Sanctuary, Knysna Elephant Park, Adventureland, Birds of Eden and Monkeyland, all of which are in the coastal region. Heading inland, The Cango Caves, varied Ostrich Farms and Cango Wildlife Ranch near Oudtshoorn are well worth the visit and make for an easy day trip.

A plethora of annual events take place, just to name a few: The famous Knysna Oyster Festival, KKNF (Klein Karoo National Kunstefees) held in Outshoorn, The Classic Car Show in Knysna, Mossel Bay’s Buffalo Motor Bike Rally, The Stilbaai Easter Arts & Crafts Fair, The Sedgefield Slow Festival, The Knysna Pink Loerie Mardi Gras, Plettenberg Bay’s The Wedge Bodyboadarding Challenge, Knysna’s Cycle Tour, George’s Strawberry Festival…and the list goes on.
